Do you know how often you are watering your lawn?
Residents who have recently purchased a home in Brazoria – Fort Bend Counties Municipal Utility District No. 3 (BFBCMUD 3) may be able to save on their initial water bills by checking their irrigation system and properly adjusting it.
To keep that curb appeal up and entice a purchase, it was the builder’s responsibility to maintain a beautiful lawn by constantly watering, even in inefficient times or weather conditions. Once purchased, new homeowners will likely want to change how frequently and how long your lawn is scheduled to be watered.
A great idea for knowing how and when to water is using an outdoor water controller. Here are some tips to reduce those initial water bills:
- Consider setting the water controller to 2 days a week (to start) using a quarter inch of water each day
- Schedule Watering for 4 am in the morning; watering earlier than 4 am (in the middle of the night) can produce fungi on plants
- Avoid watering in the heat of the day (between 8 am & 8 pm) because the water will be lost due to evaporation
- Consider turning off the water controller during the winter months
- Water down to the root zone and only water when your lawn needs it
If residents have questions about your irrigation system, be sure to consult a licensed irrigation specialist who can help guide new homeowners through use and maintenance of their systems. Water conservation and wise irrigation techniques not only helps the District but can help residents save money as well.
